IDPs Relocation Project: A Testament of Hope and Unity
The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), Diocese of Marsabit, has once again demonstrated its commitment to serving the vulnerable by successfully implementing the IDPs Relocation Project, funded by Anglican Aid Australia. The project provided much-needed support to 50 households displaced by conflict over two years ago. These internally displaced persons (IDPs) received iron sheets to help them rebuild their homes, marking the beginning of their journey toward recovery and stability.
Addressing the Needs of the Displaced
The IDPs in Marsabit, who fled their homes due to violent conflict, have faced immense challenges, including a lack of shelter, food, and basic necessities. Anglican Aid Australia has been at the forefront of addressing these needs by supplying relief food and now, by contributing iron sheets to facilitate home reconstruction. Each of the 50 selected households received 30 iron sheets, enough to construct a spacious three-room house once additional building materials are acquired.
The recipients, including women, elders, and individuals with disabilities, expressed deep gratitude to the donors and the Church. The event, graced by leaders from the national and county governments as well as clergy led by the Diocesan Bishop, provided a platform for addressing the plight of the displaced and committing to further support their relocation efforts.
Stories of Transformation
Jamila Kane Huqa, a widow and mother of six from Halake Waqo village, shared her testimony of resilience. Having lost her home and belongings to conflict, she endured harsh living conditions in the IDP camp for over two years. Receiving the iron sheets brought her renewed hope: “I thank God for this support. I can now begin repairing my house and return to a peaceful life,” she said.
Similarly, Adano Ali Idi, an elder from Issaqo Umuro village, highlighted the significance of the assistance. “This gift is a blessing from people who have never met us yet care for us. It’s the beginning of rebuilding my life,” he remarked, emphasizing the need for further support to complete the construction of his home.
Promoting Peace and Unity
The distribution event served as more than just a relief initiative; it became a forum for reconciliation and dialogue. Beneficiaries from previously warring communities sat together to discuss the negative impacts of conflict and pledged to work toward sustainable peace. Leaders encouraged continued collaboration to resolve disputes and ensure a harmonious coexistence.
In a rare opportunity, the Bishop and other Church leaders shared the Gospel with the predominantly Muslim community. The message of peace and unity resonated strongly, and prayers were offered for the region’s continued stability.
Overcoming Challenges
Despite its success, the project faced challenges, including identifying the most vulnerable beneficiaries and logistical hurdles in procuring materials. The rising cost of iron sheets required sourcing them from Nairobi, causing delays. Nonetheless, the project team, supported by local leaders, ensured its successful completion.
A Call for Continued Support
The Diocese of Marsabit is calling upon well-wishers, NGOs, and government agencies to support the IDPs further by providing additional building materials such as timber, cement, and nails. This assistance will ensure the displaced families can rebuild their homes and return to a stable life.
Gratitude and Prayer
The Diocese extends heartfelt gratitude to Anglican Aid Australia for their generosity and commitment to this cause. Their support has not only provided material relief but also inspired hope and unity among the displaced. The Church continues to pray for peace, harmony, and successful relocation efforts for all affected communities.
